Pathways to Happiness, Health and Prosperity.
After a 10 year career as a journalist and editor for newspapers in Australia and the United States, in 2010 I followed my desire for a more personally satisfying role into the nonprofit world. There, my experience as the head of newsrooms proved useful to outdoor recreation and land conservation organizations looking to boost their profile in the media, engage a broader audience, and develop creative ways to make new friends and influence people.
I am currently the Marketing and Media Relations Specialist for Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, a national nonprofit based in Washington, D.C. and with offices in four states across the country.
In recent years Rails-to-Trails Conservancy has outgrown the limited mission of rail-trail development that inspired its foundation 27 years ago. As America changed in that time, RTC grew and morphed into an organization with broader horizons – a national transportation advocate, a public health agency, an economic development consultant and a connectivity expert. How do we rebrand and present the organization to represent this new work? Can we speak to new audiences without alienating the older? How do we bring RTC’s work beyond the choir of trail advocates? That is my challenge in this creative, dynamic role. It is very rewarding to be given the freedom to break new ground.
